The latest dog to come to Casa de Hays was a 3 year old, (should be) 100lb, neutered male. His picture was posted on Facebook during his transport, and applications came in because he is gorgeous.
Unfortunately, Zane was diagnosed with advanced kidney disease and is in renal failure. So he is now a hospice foster who is not doing well health-wise and probably doesn't have very long. He also does not like other animals and has a guarding complex towards people outside of his foster family - which would have made finding the perfect family for him hard.
While the new, gorgeous dogs equally deserve loving families, don't forget to take time to look at the long-term residents, the seniors, or those with special needs. They may have the best temperaments but are passed over due to things they cannot control.
Some seniors don't even know they're old and will happily go running or hiking! Those with allergies may let your cats torture them and your children to put tiaras behind their ears. The deaf or blind ones may impress you with how easily they can be trained or may be the fastest ones in the dog park. The dog who was shy when they arrived may grow into a social butterfly with good care and training.
Never be afraid to ask as many questions as you want about any dog you may be interested in. Questions are the only way to know if that dog's personality will be compatible with you and your home. A good organization should welcome your questions and provide honest answers, even if it means you won't be that perfect family for that specific dog. There will always be another amazing dog waiting for you to find them.
